Time Management

When distraction leads to procrastination.

When I can’t focus on necessary tasks, I get caught up with doing chores around home. This can be due to a tough task at work as I discussed in my previous newsletter. Getting sidetracked can also happen when I don’t wake up well rested, which results in a headache.

Recently, I noticed the dirtiness of my kitchen counter and wiped it down. Then, I saw how dirty the floor was and swept the floor. My job is fully remote and working at home throughout the day is both a blessing and a curse. If I have a lot to get done, I shouldn’t become sidetracked. ADHD causes me to suffer from time blindness. I think I can get some cleaning done in 5 minutes but in reality cleaning might take 15 minutes.

Here is how I combat time blindness and prioritize tasks:

  • I indicate which tasks are a priority and make sure to get them done first thing in the day before checking social media or cleaning the house. I utilize a bullet journal and put a star by these tasks.

  • I purchased an alarm clock/timer that is its own device, not relying on my smartphone’s app as that becomes yet another distraction

    • It’s so easy to initially be setting an alarm on my phone’s clock app and then 10 minutes later I’m scrolling on social media!

    • Having a separate device as a timer puts a definite end to my break. I take internet or chore breaks during the day without feeling guilty.
